Among the Aztec devotees of cacao was the 9th ruler of Tenochtitlan, Montezuma II who reportedly drank up to 50 cups of spicy chocolate each day. While the Aztecs couldn't grow cacao their ruler had enough beans in storage for extensive trading and military conquests until... one black night, a comet streaked through the sky, a temple caught fire, and the Spanish explorer, Hernán Cortés, began his swath of damage in 1519, bringing disease, war, and ruin. Montezuma II was horrified to learn Cortés returned to Spain, taking with him the chocolatl and how to process it.
