Remember the sticky delight of candy apples savored on visits to summer carnivals? Thank William W. Kolb. In 1908, the Newark, New Jersey candy maker was looking for a way to brighten up Christmas sales. As an experiment, he dipped red apples into a syrupy cinnamon candy mixture, placed them his shop window to dry, and the apples sold themselves -- at the mighty price of 5 cents each.
