Display teas are modern-day descendants the Chinese tea bricks, popular during the Sung Dynasty (A.D. 960-1279). To prepare these, tea was steamed, squeezed of moisture, hand pressed and baked at high temperature. The tea bricks became so valuable, they were often used as a form of currency.
